Our Story

Bessie and Oliver Corral

Everything we do begins with a feeling. We have always designed this way, led by instinct, by what the hand understands before the mind has words for it. Arjé is built from that place, from the belief that the things we choose to live with shape the way we feel, and that the way we feel shapes everything.

We are Bessie and Oliver Corral, and our story began in New York. Bessie was leading the creative at Donna Karan's Urban Zen when a renowned mentor, Caroline Simonelli, introduced her to Oliver, a pattern maker trained in Madrid with years at Carolina Herrera. Caroline saw what we had yet to see in ourselves: that Oliver could give Bessie's vision structure and physical form, and that Bessie could give Oliver's technical mastery its spark. She was right. From the very beginning we could see the same thing, feel the same room, reach for a texture without speaking. Oliver gives form to what Bessie feels. Bessie gives soul to what Oliver builds. Creative partners became life partners, and for us the two have always been the same thing. Those years designing together across Italy and the Mediterranean deepened a creative intimacy that is at the center of everything we do, and in 2017, Arjé was born.

We started in fashion, in cashmere and silk and Italian ateliers, but for us everything is connected. A garment and a home are expressions of the same vision. Even in those early years we were creating physical spaces for our collections, pop-up stores where the environment was as considered as the clothing inside. The world around the work was always the work.

That impulse led us to create the first Arjé HOME, a fully realized apartment and showroom in New York City where you could walk in and experience our complete vision. Every piece inside it was created by us or curated from makers we love, every room a living chapter of the world we were building. That home is where we began designing our own furniture, the pieces that would become our foundation collection, and in doing so discovered a slower rhythm, a form of making that stays. Fashion moves fast. Furniture is real. It grounds a room, it holds a family, it outlasts the seasons that inspired it. That pull drew us deeper into the material itself, and we opened a wood workshop in Brooklyn where we spent two years working with the grain of the wood by hand, producing every piece of our collection ourselves.

The HOME sold as a complete world, and with it came a clarity we had been building toward for years. We had always dreamed of rooting our work in the Mediterranean, the landscape that shaped us both, a place where design and daily life are inseparable. We moved to Mallorca to raise our family and ground ourselves in the place that has always informed our sense of beauty and how we want to live. We grow food on our farm, follow the seasons, and draw from the light and rhythm of island life. Everything we design now comes from this place.

The commitment to American-made craft that began in our Brooklyn workshop found its new home in California, with a maker and workshop we consider family, someone who cares about building the way we do. Every piece is built to order, fully customizable, and made to stand for generations. Our curation continues to evolve alongside our own collection, and our gallery rotates with original art from emerging and established artists whose vision speaks to ours.

Whether you are an interior designer building a world for a client, a developer imagining a residence, a hotelier shaping an experience, or someone creating a home of your own, we are here for that process, from the first conversation to the moment every piece is in place.

Our name holds the philosophy behind it all. Arjé comes from the ancient Greek concept of archē, the elemental source from which all things emerge and to which all things return, the thread that connects material to spirit, place to process, origin to evolution. It is how we see the world, and how we build within it. The Arjé world is simultaneously complete and always becoming.

With Love,

Bessie & Oliver
